It was impossible for Joe to control his fall down the steep, gravelly bluff.

He did see his brother splash into the water. An instant later he, too, felt the shock of the cold current as he plunged in.

Joe worked hard to keep his head above the surface, but the current kept pulling him down, He looked for Frank but couldn't see him in the churning waves.

Joe pulled with his powerful arms to bring himself to the surface. But just as he was within inches, a powerful swirling eddy caught at him, forcing him to the bottom and pushing him down- stream. Joe fought hard as his lungs quickly ran out of air. Frank, he thought weakly. But his brother wasn't there, no one was, and the weight of Joe's uniform was dragging him down, drowning him.
