Chapter Twenty-five

“I have a bad feeling about you going over there,” Alex’s voice echoed into the AirPods hanging from my lobes like earrings.

“What do you mean?” I said, tossing underwear into my suitcase.

“Just that you’re going to be there with her. It worries me. Please tell me you’re going to watch it. Don’t get yourself wrapped up with her again.”

“Alex. Trust me. Nothing is going to happen. I’m in a much different place than I was back then. Mary and I actually had our first therapy session, if you can call it that.”

“That’s good! But that doesn’t make me any less anxious.”

“Everything on your end is calm, right? The kids? Mom?”

“I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s calm, necessarily. The kids are still struggling. Ben quit football. Harry won’t do his homework. The coaches and teachers are understanding, but it stresses me out, obviously.”

“Are they going to counseling?”

“They’re going. I just can’t tell if it’s doing any good. And then there’s Mom.”

“What do you mean?”

“She got scammed a few days ago. On the Internet.”

“No!”

“It was a typical case of phishing, and frankly anybody can fall for that. But when she realized it—when I realized it—and told her, she broke down. She cried and berated herself. Then a day later, she had no memory of it at all. Which on one hand is good, but on the other hand it could happen again.”

“Maybe you should—we should—childproof her computer.”

“I think we have to.”

“I’m sorry you’re having to deal with that.”

“It’s the least I can do. I’ll never be able to repay you for what you’re doing for me. And the kids.”

“Don’t be silly.”

“How are you feeling about this trip? And Laura?”

“To tell you the truth, I’ve been deliberately not thinking about it. It’s weird. It has me stirred up, you know? A lot of feelings I thought were buried for good.”

“It feels very dangerous. Emotionally.”

“Yeah,” I agreed.

“You’re still sure you have to do this?”

“I am. I will keep one thing separate from the other. I promise.”

“You don’t owe me a promise.”

“I guess I’m making myself a promise,” I said.

“Make sure you take care of yourself. That’s the main thing.”

I finished my packing, double-checking everything. Phone, wallet, passport. I hauled my suitcase downstairs. I heard Mary’s car pull into the garage. She’d arranged to get off early so she could take me to the airport.

“Hi,” she said, coming into the entry. “Let me get your bag.”

She took it, hoisted it into the car, closed the trunk, hesitating for a moment before coming to my side as I opened the passenger door. I put my purse down on the seat. She pulled me to her, pressing her body to mine, our matching height providing a perfect union of parts. Her kiss was deep and sensuous, lingering and careful.

“Please come back to me,” she said.

My gaze fixed on hers, I nodded. We said very little on the drive to the airport and our kiss goodbye reflected our uneasy truce.

Laura’s assistant had booked us at the Sheraton Park Lane near Hyde Park.
