Stability
Before and during and even after the bowl your body should remain stable not wobbling about. Some disabled bowlers actually find there is an advantage to lean on a supportive walking stick (with correct wide ferrule non pointy of course). As with a building, you can only hope to build on a good solid foundation.
The mat
We have discussed positioning the mat but, the mat is a small area you bowl from but it is remarkably larger than you expect. You can move around the mat no end to improved your chances by a foot or so laterally or two feet or so longitudinally.
These small adjustments are particularly important once you get more experienced.
