Chapter

Thirteen

“Someone has seen this bracelet and knows who it belongs to,” I say. “All we need is to find them.”

Inside the mansion, we find Cinder working on the downstairs fireplace, cleaning the flue in preparation for our Christmas morning celebration.

While the formerly dormant hearth is in the remodeled section of the shop, we’ve found we like using it during non-store hours. We’ve decorated the mantle with holly, mistletoe, and a variety of pine branches, and Belle wound tiny fairy lights around the garland.

“Belle’s freaking out about the thefts,” Cinder tells us, wiping her ash-smudged hands on a towel. “Does Robyn have any leads?”

“Nothing yet.” I allow Sawyer to help me off with my coat. “Where is Belle?”

“Here.” She steps out from the turret doorway, Leo on her heels. “What did she say?”

I lay the coat over my arm. “She has an officer reviewing camera footage and we think the culprit snuck it out the side door. She plans to question anyone in that vicinity at the time who might have witnessed it.”

Belle’s shoulders slump. “This is a disaster. Adele is so disappointed.”

I squeeze her arm. “We’ll get it back.” I hope. “And the angel. You’ll see.”

Cinder places a log in the hearth. “Does Robyn think the disappearances are related?”

Sawyer hands her another from the pile waiting on the floor. “Possibly, but there’s no proof.”

“Of course they are.” Belle’s voice is filled with frustration and exasperation. “Two items in two days, both connected to our event? How could they not be?”

“Do you think someone is trying to sabotage Christmas in Story Cove?” Cinder asks.

Leo leans on the back of a chair. “Why would anyone want to do that?”

We fall silent for a moment, considering it. Cinder places the last log on the arrangement and steps back. “I don’t know, but I, too, believe they have to be. Maybe Finn’s investigator will be able to figure something out.”

“I sure hope so.” Belle lets Leo draw her to his chest. “What a nightmare this is.”

“You need some sleep.” He rubs her back and she closes her eyes. “You’ve been running yourself ragged.”

“He’s right,” Cinder agrees. “Go to bed, Belle. We’ll all do what we can to find the stolen items first thing tomorrow.”

Leo leaves and Belle retires. Cinder calls Finn to update him. Ruby is out with Ren, and Uncle Odin and Matilda have already gone to their rooms.

I take Sawyer to our personal kitchen and put the kettle on to heat.

He shrugs off his jacket and hangs it on the back of a chair before he pulls it out to sit. “You didn’t tell them about the bracelet.”

“I didn’t want to get Belle’s hopes up.” I grab two of the Santa mugs in the dish drainer. “Tea, cocoa, or eggnog?”

“Cocoa.” I should have known; it was always his favorite. “Robyn could be right and it’s not connected to the angel.”

I open the door of our antique pie safe and retrieve a container of decorated sugar cookies. “She may also be wrong. It’s one of the only leads we have and you and I are going to pursue it.
