There are enough climbs around Hebden Bridge and Calderdale to write a separate chapter for the area, but there is one brute that stands out from the crowd: Mytholm Steeps. The climb begins just outside Hebden Bridge. As you exit the town and head west towards Todmorden, you turn onto Church Lane and begin climbing straight away on a 19% gradient with a broken surface on the left-hand side of the road. You then curve left past a chimney and there is a chance for minimal recovery before being sent upward again, but this time more steeply at 21%. The road becomes smoother by this point with only 200 metres completed, but the gradient remains at around 15%. There is nowhere to hide here, and it’s at about this point where you may question your ability to reach the top or, more likely, question your sanity.
