CHAPTER 24

Nero

If Dante Alighieri lived in the modern era, I’m certain one of his circles of Hell would closely resemble the overcrowded dance club in front of me. Loud music blasts through speakers. Strobe lights threaten to trigger seizures with how fast they flicker and swing about the cavernous room. And warm bodies with musty perspiration mixed with a variety of cologne and perfume create a stifling aroma that makes me want to cover my nose with a handkerchief.

A handkerchief? What are you, eighty?

The only solace I find in this situation is Heather’s delicate hand resting in mine. I’ve been content to follow her lead ever since she escorted us to the front of the line outside Nitro.

The bouncer didn’t hesitate to let us pass after she identified herself. I’m aware Heather is famous, but it’s easy to forget. Mostly because she carries herself so… normally. I mean, she didn’t even have bodyguards before I insisted. For someone so well-known, she’s managed to live a decently normal life.

I’m watching Heather’s hips sway as she maneuvers us through the crowd when, suddenly, she stops and looks over her shoulder. The purple lights flash over her beautiful features.

“Looks like the party is on the second level.” She points up towards a boisterous group gathered along the balcony of the second deck in the club. I take in the rowdy scene. Then, my eyes travel down the staircase, landing on the burly bouncer positioned at the bottom. A clipboard rests in his hands.

I brace myself for what is sure to be a hellish experience. “After you.”

With a halfhearted smile, Heather leads us to the staircase. Once again, the bouncer doesn’t bat an eye when she identifies herself. We climb the stairs and just manage to step onto the second floor when a broad form walks forward and wraps him arms around my girlfriend.

“Heather feather! You made it!” I’m forced to release my hold on Heather’s hand as she’s yanked up by the man I assume is Henry.

I take the man’s measure as he swings my girlfriend in his arms. He’s broad, though not particularly muscular. He’s tall, but I’m taller. I acknowledge the comparison is that of an insecure punk, but that’s because it’s been ten seconds and Henry still hasn’t released my girlfriend from his arms. It’s been a long time since I’ve given into the violent inclinations forced on me throughout my childhood, but I’m close to tapping into them if Henry doesn’t let go of Heather in the next five seconds.

A glance at the other party guests reveals glassy eyes and obnoxious cheering at Henry’s antics. Heather’s laughing, but she taps her friend’s shoulder and repeatedly tells him to put her down. I step forward to intervene when Henry’s guardian angel must warn him of the danger heading his way. He lowers her and takes a step back, meeting my gaze over her head.

Immediately, his eyes widen. Noticing her friend’s reaction, Heather turns and looks at me, and her lips part in surprise.
