It is membership of their own trade union, run by and for members, that provides the institutional context and collective experiences in which work–life is resocialised. The opportunity for economic independence is delivered through the savings, loan and insurance services of the SEWA Bank. Skill development through the trade and service co-operatives provides members with the opportunity to become independent business women who do not rely on middle-men to facilitate production and exchange. And union membership itself provides workers with life experience beyond the confines of family duty and community expectations. Membership provides individuals with the social context within which they experience inter-personal relations of mutual recognition and respect.

In the data above workers recount how the opportunity to meet with colleagues, exchange information, to plan and produce together, provides the social context within which they experience a deep level of inter-personal recognition, love and friendship. Moreover, the mutual respect and friendship that comes from knowing, being with, and being recognised by other workers who have similar work–life experiences is reported by SEWA members to establish the psychological foundation upon which they have been able to build self-confidence and trust in their ability to discern their own needs and preferences. The self-confidence exhibited in the data above is profound and poses a stark contrast to the expressions of fear and inhibition presented at the beginning of this chapter.
