Navbharat Times and Dainik Hindustan remained the top Hindi dailies in India, both with a presence in Delhi, with Navbharat leading in Bombay and Hindustan in Delhi. But it was the smaller papers which expanded rapidly. Aaj was first published from Benares in 1920 by the freedom fighter Shiv Prasad Gupta and was extremely popular for its pro-independence views. Aaj also did a lot to promote Hindi literature. In the 1970s Aaj started two more editions, in Kanpur in 1975 and Patna in 1979. The Kanpur edition was significant because it was also the territory of its rival Dainik Jagran. Within four years it gained considerable readership with a circulation of 35,000.

If Aaj started an edition in Kanpur, Dainik Jagran also expanded by starting an edition in Gorakhpur in 1974–75, where Aaj already had an edition. The newspaper already had a large circulation in Kanpur with about 80,000 copies and this growth continued throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Rajasthan Patrika in Jaipur had a circulation of about 9,000 copies in the 1960s which increased to 21,000 by 1972. Punjab Kesari in 1965 started a Punjabi daily in 1978 called Jagbani and continued to expand. Navbharat, the Nagpur-based Hindi daily, also started other editions.
