What a great sky. I’m a sucker for bright colors. What better way to add extra color than shooting at sunset.

A good “shooter’s stance” is the most important thing you can have!

My favorite part of this photo is the light skimming the top of the grass and pumpkins. I think it adds a very cool effect to the final image.

BEHIND THE PICTURE

MY FRIEND AND MODEL, Kitty, flew in from Texas to shoot with me on what I think was the hottest day on record here in Louisville, Kentucky—the heat index was around 115 degrees! Kitty wanted to shoot a pinup girl on a picnic, which I’ve done many times in the studio, but she wanted to shoot outside. We would also be working with another “model” during this photo shoot; my dog, Henry.

Working with animals poses a lot of problems. Most of the time they don’t want to sit still, and they also don’t much like the bright lights flashing in their faces, or the constant laughter that tends to surround a shoot. To try and avoid this, Henry was taken for a very long walk before we began shooting in the hope that he would just want to sit in the picnic basket we were using, and relax. As well as the basket, I also styled the shot with a vintage tablecloth, and stopped at the neighborhood market to grab a few hot dogs.

I shot this set in the middle of the hot summer’s day, but even though there was lots of natural light, I still wanted to break out a few strobes to create a different light to that being provided by the sun. I used a strobe with a 40-degree grid as my main light, and another strobe with a 30-degree grid as my backlight, both set to 1/2 power. My pinup picnic was set right in the middle of the two strobes and I shot at f/8 the whole time, with a shutter speed of 1/125 sec.
