Chapter Seven

Miach blinked and blinked again. Nick wondered if his mate was trying to process his words and think of a way to deny what had happened. It had shocked the hell out him to feel Miach sink his teeth into him. Nick knew the other guy was more dominant than him, but he’d never heard of the human giving the mating bite to the shifter before. He thought he’d have to broach the subject of topping Miach at some point.

It was a few minutes after the ecstasy of his orgasm faded that Nick realized the bite had actually mated them. His wolf was happily curled up in his mind, sated and content. Normally the shifter had to bite the human, but because the scientists had added some components of shifter DNA to Miach’s it must have changed the man enough to work the other way around, too. Miach had given in to an instinct, the need to mark his mate, and Nick knew the altered human didn’t understand its meaning.

Now, staring at Miach’s blank look, Nick worried he was about to lose his mate before their relationship really had a chance to get off the ground. “I never in a million years thought you’d bite me,” he whispered, trying desperately to figure out what Miach was thinking.

“I—I did it because I wanted to mark you,” Miach whispered. “I didn’t realize it carried such meaning for shifters.” Miach frowned, his gaze straying over the pensive look Nick knew must be on his face. “Perhaps you should tell me what it means that I claimed you,” Miach urged gently.

Okay, Miach was willing to talk about this. That was a good sign, right? “When shifters find their mates, and decide they want to spend the rest of their lives together, one shifter, the dominant one, will claim the other by biting them.” Nick smiled faintly as he said, “It’s done during sex, and what other shifters have told me about the pleasure of the mating bite wasn’t exaggerated.”

That had a corner of Miach’s mouth curving up. “Good, huh?”

Nick nodded, feeling his skin heat. Shit, when was the last time I blushed? Knowing he had to explain the rest, Nick went back to his explanation. “It also means that your life will be extended. That happens so the shifter doesn’t outlive a human mate by a couple centuries.”

Miach’s eyes widened. “A couple centuries!” he hissed.

Licking his lips, Nick swallowed. “Yeah. A shifter lives for several hundred years until they pass from old age. It’s harder for a shifter to get pregnant, phases of fertile at different times, so they will only overlap every once in a while,” he added. “And you can only get it up for your mate,” he hurried and added.

Miach jerked back. “What was that last part?”

Nick cringed. “Yeah, uh, sorry about that. A male shifter, once mated, can only get it up for their mate. I don’t know if it will be the same for you or not,” he admitted.
