NOTES TO THE INTRODUCTION

1 The kingship of Poland was elective—that is, purchasable—and the number of voters very small and restricted. The king remained under the thumb of the all-powerful native noble class (the szlachta), but his position was prestigious and powerful; it demanded that the monarch be or become a Roman Catholic, but his personal religion, necessary for Poland, was not binding on his subjects in Saxony.

2 The Description was written in French, the traditionally suitable language for its subject matter; Winckelmann’s French was smoothed out anonymously, as his Italian would be later for the Monumenti, which was written in that language at the request of Cardinal Albani.
