“And I was on my way”

The million dollar question was put to Pep in the fight-beat.com interview, albeit softly. Perhaps the interviewer should have phrased his questions more forcefully. Did the injuries affect his fighting ability? Was he the same boxer after the crash? Pep skips over the heavier implications and does not use his broken back as an excuse.

fightbeat.com: You broke your back in the 1947 plane crash you were in. Do you think you were a step slower when you returned to the ring?

Pep: “It has to slow you down, but I was always a speedster. They told me I’d never fight again but I said, ‘Look, I’m a fighter.’ I got hurt in January. I had a cast on my chest and a cast on my leg for five months. They took the cast off in June. I boxed in July. He was a tough kid. He kept coming but I kept out-boxing him, and I was on my way.”19

… when he used his head and his speed, Pep was at his best and could easily outpoint anybody, and he did for years.
