“I’m afraid that was destroyed, too, along with all of Chesterton’s notes on it,” said Beth. “Sounds like what we’ve hit is a dead end.”
“No,” said Jake. “Because Chesterton knows how to produce the antidote.”
“But he’s up in the Freezer and… Oh, yes, I see. He can be revived and questioned.”
“I’m going to talk to Bascom. He’ll finagle us a Reanimation Order and then we’ll go to the freezer.”
“Are you up to doing that?” She watched his face. “That’s not a place you—”
“Yeah, I can do it. I have to.”
A pounding commenced on the door.
“Open up, Cardigan! I know you’re in there! C’mon, c’mon!”
It was a woman’s voice, but not one he recognized.
Another voice sounded in the hotel hallway. “Miss, step away from there, please.” That was Agent MacQuarrie. “Now, very slowly bring your hands up and lock them behind your head.”
“Dimwit, I’m an agent with the National Disease Control Agency.”
“Even so, miss. Raise your hands while I frisk you.”
“You’re going to find yourself providing security for minor politicians during their tours of obscure Central American republics no later than this time tomorrow, dim bulb if you so much as touch one finger to my person. Here, look over my ID packet and put that stupid stun gun away.”
Jake placed the voice finally. “Mixon,” he said. “Onita Mixon.”
“She’s really with the NDCA?”
“Oh, yeah,” he answered. “And there are two things in the world she hates—germs and me.”
The man who stepped into The Casino monitoring room was just a shade over five feet tall. He was thin, swarthy and wore a tight fitting sky blue suit. His right hand was made of gunmetal.
Directly behind him came a lean black man carrying a lazrifle.
Then two large, wide men in suits the same color as that of the small man entered. They were dragging Spike, the bribed chef.
Gomez said, “When they assigned me this cabin, they assured me I’d have undisturbed privacy while I—”

“Shut the fuck up,” suggested the small man. He glanced from Gomez to Natalie. “You don’t have much in the way of tits, sister.”
“If you broke in here just to tell me that, I already knew.” The redhead lowered her vi&am and edged nearer to Gomez.
The small man made a sniggering so find “A couple of wise asses he observed, nodding at the tall black man. “We got us a couple of wise asses Leon. What do you think of our having a couple of wise asses Leon?”
“Not much, Buzzer.”
Buzzer gave a rueful shake of his head. “Leon doesn’t think much of you two wise asses
“I suppose we can trade badinage like this all the live long day,”
said Gomez. “But why don’t you gents simply tell us—”
“Shut up!” Buzzer touched his wrist, then poked the curly haired detective in the side with his metal forefinger.
“Hey!” A fairly strong electric shock went knifing into Gomez’s ribs, making him shake involuntarily.
Natalie said, “There’s no need
“You can shut up, too.” Buzzer gestured at the two men who were holding the shivering Spike. “Bring the asshole over here.
