Chapter 5 -- The Deal

Billy expected to loathe being tethered to the tree all night. However, it seemed to offend his human side far more than his wolf sensibilities. At least this time they had attached him to a long length of chain outdoors instead of sticking him back in that metal cage.

Luc might also have had something to do with Billy’s acceptance of his current situation. All four of them had shifted well before the full moon rose up in the night sky. Though he’d joined in the mock battles and energetic foreplay, Luc didn’t follow his packmates into the woods. He stayed within Billy’s sight, for the most part, and even curled up beside him to share his body heat when it got coldest, right before the dawn.

Billy found it hard to reconcile their coordinated attack with the caring attitude they’d shown him since. He fell asleep wondering if the next day would bring another reversal in attitude, and if he’d really find out what their interest in him -- good or bad -- was all about.

Nothing in his life -- not even the strange events of the last few months -- could have prepared him for what he heard.

“Your being here isn’t an accident,” Luc acknowledged, as they sat down on a blanket to enjoy a meal of biscuits, thick slabs of ham and scrambled eggs.

They were naked and in human form. Billy didn’t remember shifting back. He rarely did. But he was still tethered to a great big tree, shackled at the ankle now instead of the neck. He’d be a little more comfortable if he were dressed, especially when Luc started licking orange marmalade from his fingertips like it was essential to consume every molecule of it, but Billy preferred being out in the open air to being cooped up in the cabin.

He liked having Luc’s full attention even better. The other two had brought out their breakfast, then disappeared inside after exchanging long drugging kisses with their alpha. It made Billy feel growly and more than a little jealous, but that vanished as Luc began talking.

“You singled me out? Why?” He’d been a city boy until the moon madness struck, turning him into a hairy beast. How could he have done anything to these men that would cause them to treat him the way they had?

Luc made a sandwich out of his breakfast, including the marmalade, and nibbled on it while he explained. “I didn’t. The wolf that bit you did.”

“How did you know about that?”

“That’s how we all got here. Me, Steve and Jacques.”

“Why come after me then instead of the crazy wolf who’s running around biting people?” If it were up to Billy, he’d go after the mad creature and kill it before it could ruin any more lives.

“Martin, the one who bit you, is dead. You’re not, not yet anyway.”

“Is that supposed to be a threat? If you wanted me dead, you’ve had plenty of chances.”

Luc nodded, the highlights in his blond hair flashing in the sunlight.
