CHAPTER 6

I grab my boots and open the door as quietly as I can. Crouching down, I see Ronin’s feet at the end of the hall, as he turns the corner toward the front door. I pad out in my socks, trotting after him.

Cracking open the front door, I see Ronin get into a small black van. I drop to all fours and crawl out to the van and open its back doors just enough to squeeze through as the engine starts up. I hop in and carefully close the doors as the van takes off through the compound.

I put my boots on and try not to make noise as I bounce around the back of the van. There are no windows, so I can’t see out, but we drive along a bumpy road for a while and then it turns smooth. We’re on the main highway, I assume.

The inside of the van is stocked with military gear. All black and high-tech. There’s a lot of money behind Ronin’s outfit, whatever it is. I don’t think he’s a hired killer, but a hired soldier is close.

I have no idea where Ronin is going, but I’m pissed off that his priorities are with some other job and not mine. I don’t want to let my family down. If we don’t do something, Sullivan is going to gobble up our ranch and then what will become of my family?

They only know ranching. It’s who they are, their identity. I feel responsible to help them, to save them, and I’ll do whatever it takes to do that. Without me, what will they do?

We drive for a long time, and I doze on and off, but finally Ronin stops the van. I hear him drive it up onto the side of the road and park. I take two breaths and then as quietly as I can, open the back door. I crouch down and run for the trees and hide behind one.

From my vantage point, I see Ronin open the car door and get out. He looks left and right, adjusts his belt, and walks into the tree line a little ways away from me.

I can’t believe that I’ve outsmarted the big mercenary commando guy. I feel like a real hot shit. Perhaps I should take up soldiering. I wonder if it pays more than muffins.

I’m all about stealth while I follow him. He has no idea that I’m there. It’s pretty dark, but I know where we are. We were just here this morning. We’re on the road on Ed Sullivan’s property. Ronin has snuck back here without telling me, ready to take on my evil neighbor. I take back everything I was thinking about Ronin. His priorities are in the right place, and by the right place I mean, with me.

We walk for about five minutes, and we’re almost to the main house and out of the safety of the trees, when Ronin stops in his tracks. I stop, too. Without turning
