You have come at the right time. This friend of yours is really interesting. My name is Frank. Frank OâBrien. From Ireland. May I order you a drink? This will give me an excuse to speak to this âprincessâ, the waitress of the pub. I have something to tell her. Ha ha ha! Do not let my appearance fool you my friend. I am still young. I could tell he was a stranger, so I came to talk to him. These cities are cruel to strangers. I experienced that when I came over from Dublin to this city for the first time. You would not find anybody talking to you. Itâs as if every one of them is keeping a big secret to himself, and fears that if he indulged in conversation with strangers his secret will unfold, and a great punishment would befall him. His English is not fluent, but I understand from him that he is going to Ireland on a training course. I was pleased to know that Ireland was a place to go to, to study. Tell him that. Also, tell him that I thought that men at his age did not take much interest in going to school and attending courses, therefore I admire him for being so ambitious. He is going to Scotland, then. Ah! I misunderstood him. But it does not matter. Tell him also that he should not worry too much about the language problem. In Ireland they will respect you more if you donât speak good English. What a big surprise it will be to them! They think that everyone has forgotten his original language, and speaks only English. They feel guilty because they forgot their original language and gave themselves up to this foreign tongue. You will learn quickly and you will find yourself talking to them as if you were one of them. Ireland is very different from England. Dublin is not London. You will be surrounded by many friends. People will come over to you just to talk, as I am doing now. They have no secrets torturing them; secrets about which they are worried, in case they leak to strangers. Tell him that. Excuse me for a minute. I only want to ask her when sheâs coming. She promised to meet me last Sunday. She has given me nine or ten dates, but has never turned up. Maybe she is ridiculing me. But I am sure that some day she will lose her senses and keep her date. Iâm sure that once, when the hour of our meeting approaches, she will find herself lonely at home, fed up and full of emptiness, not knowing what to do with herself, and instead of staying there on her own contemplating death or suicide she will take her handbag and come out to meet me. He is going to Scotland then. Tell him that people in Ireland do not trust anybody unless he is very good at telling lies and crafty in making them up.
