The Structure of the Reconstruction Data 39

(28) a. Output sentence

*Hei said that Mary liked Johni.

b. Derivation

i.

proi said that Mary liked proi (This is the DS and is grammatical)

overlay JohnÀ

!

ii. *proi said that Mary liked proi

Johni

—ungrammatical after insertion, because triggers Condition C—

iii. *proi said that Mary likes Johni.

As mentioned earlier, sentences like (29a) would only have a derivation like that in (29b), where overlaying occurs before movement, because by assumption, pro cannot be moved by A0-movement. (This assumption will soon be grounded.)

(29) a. Output sentence

*Which pictures of Johni does hei like t?

b. Derivation

i.

proi likes proj.

InsertÀ

!

ii. *proi likes (which pictures of Johni) triggers Condition C,

which movement cannot save; MoveÀ

!

iii. *Which pictures of Johni does hei like t?

Note that the pro object overlaid with which pictures of John still triggers a Condition C violation.

Two complexities arise at this point. First, in a tricky complication, the little schematic pro suggested here must also be allowed to be an anaphor, in the sense of sharing an index with other elements in the tree.

Otherwise, a sentence like (30a) would obligatorily start out as (30bi), and would immediately trigger a Condition B violation (assuming pro is treated exclusively as a pronoun), before the anaphor could overlay the second pro.

(30) a. Output sentence

*Johni likes himselfi. (Wrongly marked ungrammatical) b. Derivation

i.

*proi likes proi (Violates Condition B)

ii.

insert anaphor and nameÀ

!

iii. *Johni likes himselfi. (Wrongly marked ungrammatical) 40
