Making Decisions

In the early stages of grief it is unwise to make any major decisions or changes in lifestyle. During this time a person is often incapable of thinking clearly, and extra disorientation adds unnecessary stress.

Selling a house or moving in with relatives should be postponed for at least a year. Changing jobs, marrying, getting a divorce, having a baby, and moving are usually all too vital to tackle competently. If at all possible, these decisions and any other major ones should be postponed until grief is fully recognized and accepted.

An exception to this rule is in regard to the base of support. For example, if a couple has retired to Phoenix from Los Angeles just before the wife dies, the base of support for the husband might still be in Los Angeles. In that case a move to return to the place where friends and family can offer the most support might be wise.
