RAVEN

Had he told me this is how my day would turn out, I would’ve never believed him.

One of the things I’ve learned early in life was to always, always, fully enjoy everything offered to me because as quickly as it comes, as quickly as it goes away.

Whether it’s a gift, a moment, a person, a memory. A morsel of life encompassing unadulterated pleasure.

Take it. Live it. Celebrate it.

This nugget of wisdom came to me while I was growing up when things weren’t always perfect, but I chose to live my life that way.

It’s not perfect, and sometimes I fail to see the good in things, but not today.

I don’t know what happened in that fitting room.

I don’t think the idea of me shopping for a cocktail dress for a business occasion was supposed to be such a glamorous event..

Somehow, I got carried away. First, the woman who helped me was good. Experienced. She had selected the best clothes to complement my figure, complexion, hair, and eyes.

What was supposed to be a simple cocktail dress has morphed into a set of clothes, from sexy lingerie to the fitted sleeveless black dress, the silk stockings, the heels––I’ve never worn shoes like these in my life––and the one of a kind coat.

After spending some time in the cosmetics department, I morphed into a different person under the masterful hands of a cosmetic artist.

And this is the result.

His expression when he set his eyes on me was priceless.

He noticed what I’d seen inside that store.

A person who looked like me but came from a different life.

Once the clothes fell over my body, the silky lingerie started brushing against my skin, the satin lining of my coat began caressing my arms, and the floral scent of my perfume entered my nose, I became someone else.

I know it’s only a moment in time. A couple of hours tops while we’re having dinner. Maybe we can drag it out a little more. Until midnight, perhaps? Like in one of those fairy tales when the princess turns into a pumpkin.

Tomorrow, I’ll go back to my normal life, brew coffee and wipe tables clean for a living, and go live in my empty house, but tonight I’m a princess, and judging by the glint in this man’s eyes, he agrees with me fully.

We enter the restaurant a few moments later before I deposit my coat in the coatroom and walk next to Kai.

Our hands almost touch, and I feel as if he suppresses his impulse to take my hand and walk with me like that to the table full of people.

We both refrain from making a statement. Plus, we don’t know what that statement would be.

People flick their eyes at us casually at first before giving us a double-take. They observe me in particular.

I even catch Kai’s father’s eye. Not that he hasn’t noticed me in his son’s office before. Or maybe he did, but that version of me wasn't how he had envisioned me.

It makes two of us.

He stands while Kai makes the introductions, and I sense heightened curiosity in his gaze.
