KAI

Earlier.

In his car.

On the phone with Grayson.

“Any luck?” I ask, peering blankly at the road in front of me.

“It looks like transactions,” Grayson says.

“Double books?”

“Most likely. But I don’t think there’s much value in it. They’re probably old. Too old to matter,” Grayson says.

“It could be a hot lead even if it’s not connected with what they’re after.”

“It could. I’m not saying it’s not possible.”

“I know a forensic accountant. He might be able to help me, but I don’t think he’s in town right now. I’ll talk to him after the holidays.”

“All right.”

We end the call, and moments later, I stop in front of his building.

Grayson walks out of the lobby while I step out of the car. The engine is running when I meet him on the sidewalk.

He hands me the ledger book.

Later, we exchange Christmas greetings and go separate ways.

I plop the ledger book into the passenger seat, check the time, and head uptown.

It’s late afternoon when I roll my car in front of Alejandro’s hotel. I don’t know if he’s here.

He could be anywhere, to be honest. I didn’t want to call him because I counted on the element of surprise.

The clerk at the front desk confirms he’s in his room.

I take the stairs instead of the elevator and knock on his door a few moments later.

Soon, footsteps trail the floor inside, and the door opens.

“Kai?”

I smile.

“May I come in?”

“Uh… Yeah. Sure.”

He is surprised and needs a few seconds to regain his composure.

I’m unsure whether he was ready to dine in or go out.

“Are you alone?” he asks, looking over my shoulder as if someone else is about to enter his hotel room.

“Yes, I am.”

My tone brings his eyes to my face.

“I was about to order dinner. Do you want to eat with me?”

“No. I’m fine. I have to go someplace else,” I say, shedding my coat.

He takes it and places it on the back of a chair.

“Drinks then?”

“Yes. I can do that. Something light.”

I slide onto the couch and wait for him to come back. He brings two drinks and puts them on the coffee table before sitting in the armchair.

“What brings you here, brother?” he asks, more relaxed.

I empty half of my glass and put it down.

“I need to know if you’re still in,” I say directly.

He doesn’t answer.

I move my eyes to him.

“Did you talk to her?” he asks.

“Yes. She came to me last night after you left.”

His expression changes.

“What did she say?”

I smile.

“It doesn’t matter what she said. It’s what you say.”

“Does she want to end it?”

“You’ll have to ask her that.”

I snap and he notices. Cocking an eyebrow at me, he expects me to adjust my attitude.

“I went with her over the options. And then she went home. I haven’t heard back from her. But so far, she’s still in. I’m not here to talk about her. I’m here to talk about what you want to do.”

“Why do you need to know?”

“Because it drives her crazy. She had a meltdown last night.”

He crosses his arms over his chest.
