âOkay, baby, Iâll call you next week. Good luck in your basketball game.â April hung up the phone. Because he was the oldest, Julian was always the last to talk to her. Talking to the kids always left her seesawing between happiness that they sounded okay and misery that they werenât all together. She went back to Indiana to see them as often as she could, but most of the time they kept in touch by phone.
She leaned back against the couch cushions. Someday sheâd manage to get the kids again. Theyâd have new clothes and go to the best schools. Someday sheâd see them off every morning and have dinner with them every night. Someday theyâd be with her again.
Someday soon.
But not right now. April sighed. Right now, she had to deal with hei life in Chicago. The life that had been bulldozed by the Singleton brothers and was not a total disaster. No, she thought, not total. I still have the kids and my job and my classes. Aside from the publicity and the obnoxious Jake Singleton, things were okay. So, April, letâs take care of Mr. Jacob Singleton, attorney-at-law, and then life can go back to the way it was.
Why didnât that thought make her happier?
Well, sitting around brooding wasnât going to do anything toward getting her life in order. April went back to the office. It was two oâclock, and she needed to talk to Mr. Bogart. She got to his office door and paused. She knew what she wantedâJake Singleton roasted over a slow fireâbut she wasnât sure her boss would help her if she let him know how vindictive she was.
âAre you going to tell me what happened?â Mr. Bogart looked inquisitively over the top of his glasses. âHas Jake dropped the idea of a lawsuit?â
âYes, but I donât care anymore,â April said. âNow I want to sue him.â
âAgain, please, April.â Mr. Bogart cupped a hand behind his ear. âMy hearing must be going. I thought you said you were going to sue Jake Singleton.â
âExactly. All we have to do is figure out what to sue him for. The only reason Jake isnât going to sue me is that he knows about my family and he feels sorry for me. Sorry for me!â Her voice turned into acid as she continued, âNow that he understands how underprivileged I am, heâs willing to let me keep the fifty thousand I got from his brother by fraud and chicanery.â April glared at her bossâs smile. âThe selfsatisfied, self-importantââ She ran out of ideas.
âFool?â Mr. Bogart suggested.
âNot quite. Idiot, maybe.â April thought for a moment, but no more insults suggested themselves. She got back to the main point. âI want to sue him.â
Elihu Bogart leaned back in his desk chair and steepled his hands in front of his face. April looked at him suspiciously. Was he smiling?
âWhat do you want to sue him for?â Elihu inquired. âIf you donât mind my asking, that is.â
âI donât care.
