“Okay, baby, I’ll call you next week. Good luck in your basketball game.” April hung up the phone. Because he was the oldest, Julian was always the last to talk to her. Talking to the kids always left her seesawing between happiness that they sounded okay and misery that they weren’t all together. She went back to Indiana to see them as often as she could, but most of the time they kept in touch by phone.

She leaned back against the couch cushions. Someday she’d manage to get the kids again. They’d have new clothes and go to the best schools. Someday she’d see them off every morning and have dinner with them every night. Someday they’d be with her again.

Someday soon.

But not right now. April sighed. Right now, she had to deal with hei life in Chicago. The life that had been bulldozed by the Singleton brothers and was not a total disaster. No, she thought, not total. I still have the kids and my job and my classes. Aside from the publicity and the obnoxious Jake Singleton, things were okay. So, April, let’s take care of Mr. Jacob Singleton, attorney-at-law, and then life can go back to the way it was.

Why didn’t that thought make her happier?

Well, sitting around brooding wasn’t going to do anything toward getting her life in order. April went back to the office. It was two o’clock, and she needed to talk to Mr. Bogart. She got to his office door and paused. She knew what she wanted—Jake Singleton roasted over a slow fire—but she wasn’t sure her boss would help her if she let him know how vindictive she was.

“Are you going to tell me what happened?” Mr. Bogart looked inquisitively over the top of his glasses. “Has Jake dropped the idea of a lawsuit?”

“Yes, but I don’t care anymore,” April said. “Now I want to sue him.”

“Again, please, April.” Mr. Bogart cupped a hand behind his ear. “My hearing must be going. I thought you said you were going to sue Jake Singleton.”

“Exactly. All we have to do is figure out what to sue him for. The only reason Jake isn’t going to sue me is that he knows about my family and he feels sorry for me. Sorry for me!” Her voice turned into acid as she continued, “Now that he understands how underprivileged I am, he’s willing to let me keep the fifty thousand I got from his brother by fraud and chicanery.” April glared at her boss’s smile. “The selfsatisfied, self-important—” She ran out of ideas.

“Fool?” Mr. Bogart suggested.

“Not quite. Idiot, maybe.” April thought for a moment, but no more insults suggested themselves. She got back to the main point. “I want to sue him.”

Elihu Bogart leaned back in his desk chair and steepled his hands in front of his face. April looked at him suspiciously. Was he smiling?

“What do you want to sue him for?” Elihu inquired. “If you don’t mind my asking, that is.”

“I don’t care.
