ELIOT WAS NOT A FAN OF THE HALFWAY house. Shots had been fired at the location multiple times during our previous investigation, and he was leery when he got out of his truck.

“It’s quiet today,” he noted as he met me on the sidewalk, his eyes busy. “There were more people on the street last time we were here.”

“Which resulted in death and destruction,” I reminded him. “Maybe the locals are afraid of this place.” I eyed the desolate house. It looked as if it might fall down at any second. “It does look haunted.”

“Are people staying here?” Eliot squinted at the second floor. “I don’t see any lights.”

“Given what happened, I wouldn’t be surprised if they shut this place down. I don’t plan to get my answers here anyway.”

Eliot tugged on his gloves. “Who do you plan on getting answers from?”

I craned my neck, searching the street until I found who I was looking for. “Some old friends.”

Eliot followed my gaze, grinning when he caught sight of the brightly clad women. “I remember them. What were their names?”

“Sally Anne and Chantelle,” I replied. “They work these streets, which means they’ve seen a lot of faces.”

“And probably provided hand-jobs to more than a few of them.”

I shrugged, unbothered by his tone. “They have to do what they have to do to survive.”

“I’m not shaming them.”

“They’re good sources. They helped us before.”

“And I’m sure they’ll help us now ... for a price.”

“Don’t cast aspersions on them until they’ve earned it. You brought your wallet, though, right?”

Eliot nodded. “You’re going to owe me onion rings and fried cheese curds in bed to go with the coneys if I have to pay for information on top of everything else.”

“I’m sure we can work something out.”
