Chapter Six
Logan wrote another line of code into the main computer on The Americas. The ship had been damaged slightly during the attack, and it was going to take him a few more hours to get it right again. The computer was his first job. He had sorted out the control room, but there was a glitch in the heating controls of his bedroom and it was currently far hotter than it should be. Logan didn’t much fancy setting off on his journey with a bedroom that left him sweating after a few minutes.
He swiped to the next page on his journal and added the numerals into the computer. It spat back an answer, and Logan frowned. The damn thing was not working, and he was becoming impatient. He wanted to leave Sharda’s moon as soon as possible. The days were ticking by, and each was getting harder than the last. Zaya was right in one sense. Being surrounded by memories of Matt was hard, but Logan thought it was harder still to stay in the place where Matt had left…where he had forced him to leave.
At least on one of the planets in the fringes Logan would have good memories surrounding him. Right now anything would help. Anything would be better than this.
He scowled and swiped the journal again. A new line of code was presented to him. Logan keyed it in. It did not work.
For fuck’s sake!
“Logan?”
“What?” The word was little more than a growl, but Zaya didn’t seem to care. He’d been sniping and scowling at her for days. She took it all.
“I did not think to find you here,” she said as she stepped into the computer room. Logan shot her a glare. For once she wore a top, though in Logan’s opinion that was compromised slightly by the fact she wore only a small piece of material around her pussy, the rest of her was completely bare. “Mickr told me you were in the south dome helping with repairs,” she added.
“I finished a half hour ago,” Logan snapped. “Your people work fast, Zaya, there is not much left to do.”
“They are very efficient.”
“You don’t say.”
She rested her bare ass on the table next to where Logan was inputting the numerals. He ignored it.
“It made me realize,” she said. “There are many men here who would like more of a physical challenge. I have decided to add two new domes to our little city. It would increase our capacity by about five hundred families.”
“From where?”
“Excuse me?”
“Are you just going to go and scoop them off various planets?” he demanded.
Zaya laughed softly. “No. I’ll send some scouting ships to the fringe systems. As you and I both know it is where most of the systems’ rebels end up. They will be welcome here.”
“You will have another couple of thousand people pledging you their devotion.”
“It isn’t about that,” she said and Logan couldn’t help but pick up the note of hurt in her voice. Instantly he felt guilty, because over the past few days she had been good to him.
