A fairly small number of press stories over the past decade have described the various incidents that have occurred, but few have framed the story as part of a pattern, as Fisk and Gowing attempted to do early on. Each of the media organisations involved in the incidents described here have made strong protests, and seen their editors and senior executives write with demands for investigation to the press liaisons of the Pentagon and other parts of the US military, the White House and Congress – as have the CPJ, Reporters Sans Frontières and other press freedom advocacy groups – but these protests and demands for transparent investigation have had negligible effects.

Reports from the US military on press killings involving its forces have typically been released months or even years after the incidents took place, have mostly ignored reports of witnesses other than military personnel, and have typically concluded that troops acted ‘within the rules of engagement’.10 The lack of accountability from the US military continues to frustrate media organisations. Al Arabiya executive editor Nabil Khatib complained:

of the 11 (of his staff) that were killed, three were killed by American troops and until now we never got any reports from anybody about this investigation, why it happened and how it happened. Five other people […] were lost when insurgents bombed our office, and until now nobody in Iraq, the government or whoever, gave us any explanation or any results of any investigation of who might be the one who did it. I mean, there is no investigation. It’s just going on and on with no special attention to fighting the phenomenon itself.11
