Preparing Walls for Long-Lasting Adhesion

Wallpaper can conceal many imperfections in your walls, but it is best to start with a smooth clean surface. Thin or light-colored papers, and foils will show imperfections more readily than thicker multi-patterned vinyls.

The first step in papering your room is to remove any and all fixtures, shelves, etc., from the walls.

Plaster and Patch

Use joint compound to fill holes and smooth over imperfections. If you have plaster walls, you may have to use plaster to repair major damage where you can see the lath. To repair drywall, let damaged area dry thoroughly after removing old paper, cut away any tears in drywall with a razor blade, then spackle any depression or holes.
