Chapter Nine

Manny grimaced as he watched Cecil struggle to down a glass of juice and some crackers. He hadn’t seen the man throw up yet but only because Cecil had very little on his stomach.

“It’s time,” Creed said as he walked in from the hallway, holding Cecil’s jacket and hat out to him.

“How long does it take to get to the doctor?” Manny asked as he took the jacket and hat and helped Cecil into them.

“It’s a thirty minute drive to the ferry and then another thirty minutes crossing the bay. Once on the other side, the doctor’s office is only ten minutes down the highway.”

“That’s kind of a long ways to go to see a doctor,” Manny said. “Why not find one closer?”

“Dr. Graham, Cecil’s normal doctor, recommended Dr. Kramer. He’s one of the best oncologists on the west coast,” Cecil insisted. “I wanted the best.”

That worked for Manny. His love should only have the best. “Well, have you thought of moving closer then?”

Creed snorted but didn’t say anything.

“This house was built by my grandfather almost a hundred years ago,” Cecil said in a voice that said he clearly thought Manny was out of his mind for even considering any place else. “I like the peace and quiet here.”

Again, Manny found himself giving in because he wanted the best for Cecil, even if it was his peace of mind. “What if there’s an emergency?” They were practically on the moon. It would take forever and a day for an ambulance to arrive if Cecil’s chemo made him too sick.

Manny saw the biggest grin come over Creed’s lips. The man practically bounced on his heels. “There’s a helicopter and a helipad on the other side of the garage.”

“You fly?”

“Oh, hell, yeah.” There was pure delight in the look on Creed’s face, a man very happy with his toy.

Manny blinked. “Will you teach me?”

Creed’s head cocked to one side. “I suppose I could take you out a few times.”

That worked for Manny as well. He felt a whole lot better knowing that there was some means of quick transportation in an emergency. He liked this lakeside place that Cecil had, but he would be a whole lot happier if they parked their asses over the top of the doctor’s office. Barring that, a helicopter made him feel better.

“Okay, drink your juice, bebé. We need to get on the road if we’re going to get you to the doc’s on time.”

Cecil’s lip curled mutinously. “You drink it.”

“And so it begins,” Creed said with a small chuckle.

Manny raised one eyebrow as he glanced at the man. “What begins?”

Creed’s grin grew snarky. “You’ll see.”

Why does that make me nervous? Manny glanced back at Cecil. The man was staring at his juice like it was an alien ready to jump out and attack him. The thinned lips pressed together told Manny Cecil was probably done drinking juice for right now.

“I’ll be out by the car,” Creed said as he picked up an insulated lunch bag he had packed with snacks and bottled juice.
