Standing there, rereading that message, my spine prickled. The note implied that nothing had actually changed. Obviously the man was yielding no ground, had no intention of taking Alix seriously. That was consistent, I saw, with his claim that her derangement was temporary. The scope of the battle began to overwhelm me. I felt despair making dangerous inroads on my spirits.

Stop it! I lectured myself. Stay angry! That’s the only chance you’ll have against this asshole.

I heard Alix on the stairs and called her to me. She came through the archway swinging a miniature duffel bag, looking somewhat more cheerful. I hated to disrupt her mood, but I could see no good way around it.

“Look at this,” I said, pointing to the flowers.

“How dare he?” Alix cried. Wadding Charles’s note into a ball, she flung it the length of the room. “He has no right! He has no right to tell my family anything!”

I picked up her bag and took her by the hand, backtracking through the kitchen. She locked the door, and we bolted for my car, leaving a dozen long-stemmed roses to unfurl in an empty house.
