Chapter 17

Leon

What the hell was he getting himself into?

Leon had stayed in the shower longer than intended because of his racing mind. He was a nice shade of red from heat by time he emerged again. His clothes clung to his damp skin and his hair was slicked back.

But the sight of Shadow sitting on the bed when he emerged made his heart bounce around in his chest from nerves and excitement. This guy had once been his best friend and work partner, and now...

Now things were getting serious. But was Leon ready for that kind of commitment after all of that hurt?

The rest of the evening went by smoothly enough. The two sat down on the foot of the bed and watched some football, which Leon was pleased enough about. Shadow didn't care much for it but Leon refused to let him change the channel.

As the hours trickled by, little by little, they shifted closer to one another. When his knee brushed with Shadow's, his nerves sparked to life.

“Okay, I should probably be going since I have work in the morning,” Leon announced as he cleared his throat and rose to his feet.

“The bed's big enough for both of us...” Shadow suggested while carefully watching Leon.

Leon's heart pounded as he licked his lips. When was the last time he had shared a bed with anyone...?

“Since it's late, I may as well,” Leon coolly responded even if his heart was pounding a mile a minute. There was no way to hide that kind of a reaction from a being as sensitive as Shadow either.

Without saying a thing, Leon stripped down to his black boxers. He was aware of Shadow's eyes on him but didn't comment on it as he climbed into the left side of the bed. He stayed as close to the edge as possible, facing outward.

A few moments later, Shadow slid into the right side of the bed. Leon assumed he had undressed as well but hadn't been able to watch. Why hadn't he been able to watch? How hot was Shadow without his clothes? He hoped Shadow at least was wearing underwear, though, or things were bound to get awkward.

“Good night, Leon.”

Damn, that voice was so soft and smooth that it always made Leon's hair stand on end with pleasure.

“Night,” Leon grunted as he reached out and turned off the lamp on his side, plunging the room into darkness.

The scent of stale air. Cold metal sheets beneath his paws. Echoing voices. Blood pounding in his ears. Louder voices, angry voices. Gunshots exploding like thunder. Grates and blood.

Leon awoke with a jolt, gasping for breath and aware that someone had a grip on his arm. He wrenched himself away from Shadow's front, his eyes wild and mind racing as the unfamiliar room came into view.

“Where am I?!”

“Leon! Leon, it's okay,” Shadow urged, sat upright beside him with his hands held in the air to soothe him. “You're in my hotel room. You stayed over with me and we were sleeping.
