Build quality:
Even this budget lightweight from the Bristol works came with the same high standard of workmanship as its more expensive stablemates. The front moulded panel sports three windows, whilst the smooth gloss exterior gives a more up-market look. Interior fittings are robust and soft furnishings hard-wearing.
Exterior:
The plain and simple profile has low-key graphics, which some may find dull, but the Beachcomber doesn’t pretend to be a super luxury tourer. The 440/4 has deep large side windows, and comes complete with a glazed stable door.
Interior:
There’s a light and airy feel to the 440, an impression helped by the light oak woodwork for the furniture and the dusty pink soft furnishings. The front dinette is spacious, with two single settees, and the kitchen and spacious washroom are central. A rear end single dinette is ideal for the kids. Roof locker storage isn’t bad, nor is the wardrobe. All in all, a good starter van for a young family.
Standard equipment:
Basic essentials: heater, fridge, full shower, hot water, full mains electricity and a manual cassette loo.
How to identify model year:
A plate by the door: the last two digits in the serial number give the year.
Conclusion:
Predecessor to the highly successful Rangers, the Beachcomber paved the way for Bailey. Good value and quality build are the big Bailey selling points. The 440/4 has a popular layout and, although a little plain, it will serve its purpose as a lightweight family Van. We haven’t heard any bad reports on the Beachcombers as a range.
Other Beachcomber models worth considering:
500/4, 500/5.
