CHAPTER ELEVEN

On later reflection, Allison pinpointed the moment Brad emerged from the bathroom as her undoing. Clad in torn, faded blue jeans with his hair and beard subdued, he looked trendy, fashionable...sexy.

“How do you like the latest disguise?” he asked, pausing on the landing when he saw her coming out of her bedroom.

She swallowed hard. “Disguise?”

When he’d been a shabby bum, she’d found it difficult to deny the attraction. Now tight denim wrapped the muscles of his thighs, corded arms protruded from the sleeves of a black T shirt that outlined the muscles on his chest, covered his flat stomach and disappeared into his belt. She had to give up any remaining denials.

“I thought I’d blend into the crowd at the concert,” he replied, and his voice sounded husky to her. Maybe because she wanted it to sound husky, to know he found her as desirable as she found him.

“Close,” she assured him, trying to sound normal. “You need to mousse your hair up instead of down.”

His gaze traveled slowly down her body, pausing at her red sweater, moving on to the black slacks then up to her face again. He took a step closer to her, and his voice, when he finally spoke, was a hoarse whisper.

“The only thing you could possibly need—” He blinked and suddenly stepped back, cleared his throat, then resumed speaking in more normal tones. “A coat. It’ll be chilly tonight, and we’ll probably have to walk a ways from the car.”

“Huh?” Allison blinked rapidly, trying to acclimate herself to the sudden, unexpected change in attitude.

“Cool,” Megan—obviously the reason for Brad’s sudden change—approved as she bounced up to study first Brad then her mother. “Mom, you look like you’re going to work.”

“Your mom looks great,” Brad disagreed, draping one arm around Megan’s shoulders and pulling her over for a hug. “Let’s get our coats and ear plugs and hit the road.”

Brad stepped back into the bathroom, emerging with a denim jacket and a cell phone.

“Tool of the trade,” he said with a shrug as he clipped it onto his belt then hid it with the jacket.

“You see, Mom?” Megan exclaimed triumphantly. “Are you expecting a call from your agent about a new record contract?”

“If I get a call to record a song, you’ll be the first to know.”

“All right!”

When they walked out of the house, Brad took Allison’s key from her to lock the door then wrapped one arm around her and one around Megan as they started down the walk. A glance up the street assured him of a witness, and he wanted the show to be worthwhile.

Allison followed the direction of his gaze then looked nervously back at him. “We have company,” she whispered, pulling away slightly.

He held her tighter, brushed a kiss across her smooth cheek and smiled.

As they drove away from the curb in the black sedan, he watched the van in his rear view mirror. Half a block behind them, it pulled out.

“Can you lose him?” Allison asked softly.

“We don’t want to,” Brad murmured.
