Chapter Eleven

Hugh

Logan ended up sleeping until it was time to rejoin the children and Santiagos for dinner. The three of them were led to the dining room by a woman in a uniform where Lupe and Fern were already sitting, having changed their clothes and taken a shower.

When the meal was served, Fern poked at his dish, enchiladas in a steaming verde sauce. "What is this?" he asked.

"Chicken strips," both Julian and Lupe replied at the same time.

Mrs. Santiago frowned at the two of them until Hugh explained to her the situation. She laughed clapping her hands in front of her body.

"Your mother was the same!" she said in slow, sure English. "With her everything was tacos and rice."

Lupe grinned at her grandmother as they both shared a moment of love and loss. She obviously missed her mother but being able to share her memory with someone who loved her just as much, was powerful for her recovery.

Mr. Santiago began to speak, and it was Lupe this time who translated his words into English. "The car will need a new weld to mold the piece back together. We have the tools here. But he will need to order a part that may take a few days to arrive."

That was fine with them. They'd planned on staying a few days longer any way to get a feel for Lupe's grandparents and everyone else who worked on the farm. "Thank you, Mr. Santiago, gracias."

"He says to call him Rico and his wife, Regina. He also says that you are welcome to look into every corner if that is what it takes for you to be comfortable with leaving his grandkids--oh wait, that's me. He says you can search basically everywhere before you go," Lupe said, shoveling a huge forkful in her mouth. "It's been so long since I had good cooking. This tastes like mom used to make," she said with a full mouth.

From what Hugh had seen, there was nothing to fear from these people. They looked like they truly loved and missed their grandchildren and while the reason for them needing to stay was sad, they were all doing their best. They also seemed better off than anyone knew they'd be.

"That is kind but--"

"Maybe we could stay a few weeks?" Logan suggested, speaking for the first time since they sat down. "Really get a feel for the place? Then when we leave, it will be with a clear conscience."

One look at Julian told Hugh he didn't know what Logan was playing at either. Was he not feeling well? Had he seen something that the two shifters had missed? That seemed unlikely since they were the ones with enhanced senses. Hugh wasn't going to contradict his mate in front of an audience though so he only he nodded like he agreed. Staying a little longer couldn't hurt.

By the end of dinner, they had decided to stay the rest of the week and into the next one. Hugh would give Lupe the adoption papers when she was ready.
