“Mr. Azarov,” the voice on the phone which wakes me up in the middle of the night says. “We’re calling in regards to Mrs. Thurston. She’s taken a turn for the worse—her doctor doesn’t expect her to live more than a day or two more.”

It takes me a moment to remember who Mrs. Thurston is.

Melissa stirs next to me.

“We’ll be there as soon as we can.”

“Good—Mrs. Thurston has been asking after her granddaughter, Melissa. Does she have any other next of kin we should inform?”

Melissa has mentioned her mother, and she sounds only slightly less negligent and unpleasant than my own. A drug addict, Melissa had said.

I, still, have not revealed my own mother’s situation. Melissa assumes her mother is dead, and I’m certain mine is.

“None living that we’re aware of,” I murmur softly into the phone.

Once I hang up, I slide out of bed and begin to dress. My absence wakes Melissa.

“Kolya,” she says, using my Russian nickname. “What’s going on? Work?”

Work is our euphemism for killing. Sometimes, in the middle of the night, a situation will arise and I will need to take care of it—executing a son of a bitch even more evil than me.

But for once, it’s not that.

“Melissa,” I say, softly, as gently as I can. The change in my tone—usually cocky, vicious, and demanding—seems to set her on edge right away and she sits up in bed. “It’s your grandmother. She’s—”

“I’ll be ready to go in ten minutes,” Melissa replies before I can even finish. She’s completely awake.
