The two objects attained by trap venting or back venting, as it is termed in the plumbing trade, are: First, the preservation of the water seal in the trap when siphonic action is developed by the discharge of some adjoining fixture. Second, to assist in the aeration of the internal branch pipe leading to the trap of the fixture ; the vent pipe “ theoretically ” producing a circulation of air within and over the branch system of waste piping, which is desirable; practically, however, this circulation of air in many instances amounts to little.
When the main lines of soil and waste piping are carried through the roof full size and the plumbing fixtures are situated immediately near those lines, so that the branches are not more than three to five feet long, and a trap is used that can not be siphoned under the conditions it is subjected to when in position, there is little or no need of wasting money on long lines of “ back vent” pipes.
On the plumbing section it will be observed that I have shown and also call in the specification for the venting of the traps of the bath and basin, the only fixtures in the house which are trap vented. The following will explain why this is done: When the non-siphoning traps before mentioned are subjected in practice to strong siphonic action it produces in the trap an oscillation of the water caused by partial vacuum, which raises a continued gurgling sound lasting during the period of discharge of an adjoining fixture, and although the sound does no harm, still, to my mind, it is quite objectionable in or near a sleeping apartment—particularly as this same sound occurs in the ordinary S trap when it is being siphoned.
The plumbing of this residence can be done for $800, in accordance with plans and specification.
