THOMAS pushed back his chair with a contented sigh.

“I swear, boy, your cooking just keeps on getting better and better.” He glanced down at the plate, on which there was not a single trace of his dinner remaining. He snorted. “I think you can tell I enjoyed that.”

Peter’s cheeks glowed. The boy had done him proud with a dish of chicken in a white wine sauce, accompanied by brown rice. The smells had tantalized him as soon as he opened the front door, making his mouth water. Peter got up from the table and removed the plates to the sink before switching on the coffee machine. It wasn’t long before the wonderful aroma of freshly brewed coffee pervaded the kitchen.

“How about you pour us both a cup of coffee and bring them through to the lounge?” Thomas said as he stood, pushing his chair back into position. “Then we can have a talk.” He waited for Peter to acknowledge his words and then went into the lounge. He glanced around the room in satisfaction. The polished surfaces gleamed, the mirror was smear-free, and the carpet looked like new. The boy had really gone to town on his cleaning. Thomas wasn’t an untidy man by any means, but he knew cleaning had not been high on his list of priorities. It was enough that the place was tidy whenever Leo came round. Now and again Thomas would be seized by the urge to clean the house from top to bottom, but such occasions were few and far between.

He listened to the sounds from the kitchen as Peter washed and cleaned up after the meal. There was a chill in the air that night, and Thomas decided to light the fire. The log store next to the fireplace was fully stocked, and the basket on the hearth was filled to the brim with kindling. Peter had seen to everything. Quickly and efficiently Thomas got a fire going, so that by the time Peter came in bearing two cups of coffee, it was burning away merrily.

Peter curled up on the sofa and pulled the throw over his lap, snuggling it around him. He picked up his cup and warmed his hands on it. Thomas seated himself in his favorite squashy armchair and gazed at the boy across from him.

“Was there anything particular you wanted to ask? Something that maybe came to mind during your reading?”

Peter nodded and then sipped his coffee before speaking. “There is something I’ve been thinking about ever since my first conversation with Alex and then with you.” He gazed into the flames, and the firelight cast a warm glow on his face. Thomas was pleased to see the changes in the boy since that time. His face had filled out slightly, and that gaunt, drawn look was no longer evident. His eyes were brighter, and there was a light in them that transformed his face.

“Go on, lad,” Thomas said encouragingly.

Peter took a long drink of his coffee. “What’s a safeword?”

Aha.
