• HP (high pressure) tyres: This system is made up of a tyre that is wired to a rim with an inner tube inside it, and is the type of tyre that most people will be familiar with. This system is easy to operate and maintain as it is generally very robust. There is huge variety of tyre available and everyone will have their own preference based upon performance, experience and even colour. Inner tubes are relatively cheap and easy to replace and it is easy to keep a spare with you when out training. This type of tyre is by far the best option for training purposes.

• Tubeless tyres: A relatively new arrival, and similar in appearance to the HP tyre, this system seals a tyre on a rim with a valve so pressure can be maintained. The downside is that there is a narrow choice of rims available and a narrow choice of tyres available. Repairing punctures while out on the road can also be difficult. These tyres suffer fewer pinch punctures and can be very responsive, but are less suitable to triathlon than other types.
