Chapter Fourteen

Kennedy

Mannix and Ares took turns pacing across the room.

Ice and I lay on Mannix's bed, thighs pressed together. His nose was buried in my hair. He slowly wound tendrils around his fingers. My eyes were half closed as I tried not to drift off to sleep.

"Can you believe that asshole?" Mannix growled. It was his turn to pace, while Ares leaned against the wall and watched him. "He actually suggested sending Kennedy back to Bell. As if we'd fucking let that happen."

"If he makes her go, we can't stop him." Ares didn't seem to like the words he was speaking any more than Mannix did.

"The hell we can't," Mannix snapped. He stalked over to the window and back again.

"What are you going to do? Go to war against the whole Brantley family? Bro, we're no use to anyone if we're dead." Ares' customary scowl was back in place.

"I'd rather be dead than let Kennedy go back there," Mannix said.

"If you're dead, he's going to send her back anyway," Ares pointed out.

Mannix rounded on him, but couldn't deny the truth of what he said.

"He might not be planning to do that," Ice said without lifting his face to look at them. He inhaled like he was breathing in the scent of me. As if I was some exotic perfume, or drug.

"I hope he's not," I said sleepily. If I ended up back in the basement room, I doubted anyone would let me go a second time. How long would it take to die down there? Not long once I gave up on the idea of ever getting out again.

I shuddered.

"You okay, Beautiful?" Ice asked. His eyes peered through a wall of my hair like he was looking through a hedge.

"Yeah, just remembering the basement."

To my surprise, Ares walked over and slumped down beside me. I hadn't seen him look worried before, but he did now.

"It's okay to be affected by shit like that. That kind of sensory and sleep deprivation is designed to fuck with people. It's literally one of the worst forms of torture known to humans."

Right, he studied psychology. If anyone knew about stuff like that, it was him.

I smiled faintly. "Is, 'shit like that,' the clinical term?"

"In my clinic it is." He cocked his head. "You want to talk about it?"

"You should," Ice said. "It'll make you feel better."

He was probably right, but I didn't know what to say.

I squeezed Ice's hand when he curled his fingers around mine.

"It was a whole bunch of nothing," I said finally. "It felt like I was stuck in a black hole, with nothing but my thoughts."

It wasn't one of those nice, relaxing sensory deprivation tanks people pay money to lie in for an hour or so. This was hour after hour in a cold, dark space.

"Places like that can cause hallucinations," Ares said. "The brain can do strange things when it has nothing else to do."

"Are you saying this is a hallucination?" I poked him on the arm with my fingernail.
