Free bicycles, distinguished by color, for on campus short-term use. Some campuses and several cities around the world have tried to reduce auto dependency on a campus or in the city by free public bicycles. The theory is that if a campus or a downtown is flooded by a large number of bicycles for short errands, fewer cars and fewer parking spaces would be required on a campus in a central business district. Bicycles that are abandoned and donated from bike shops can make up the basic inventory, or uniform bikes can be purchased. In some cases the bikes are available after the potential user deposits a coin to free the lock, in others, a university ID must be shown. The bike is used and then locked at the end of the use period and the coin is returned.The fleet of several thousand white bikes in Copenhagen, Denmark, operates by coins; the checkout systems at the University of Colorado and University of Montana require student IDs and signed liability waivers. At the National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, 300 bright yellow bikes were placed on the campus. However, over several years few were still usable because no maintenance or repair program was part of the effort. Therefore, without a replacement of lost or displaced bicycles and a diligent upkeep and repair program the campus or community “share-a-bike” program has mixed success. Careful check-out procedures that require the user to take responsibility for the condition of the bike are critical, as are ongoing maintenance funds.
