Chapter Nine
Seth bounced the tennis ball, getting ready to serve to his older brother, Conner.
The sun was shining high in the sky. It was a beautiful thing. Seth took note of robin-blue sky and the white puffy clouds rolling in. He was in a great mood. The best, actually. He smiled and felt his eyes crinkle behind his sunglasses. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been so happy. He served and rushed the net for the return that never came.
Seth’s brother Conner gave him a look that blew the smile off his face as he approached the net.
“What?” Seth asked.
“What the fuck exactly. You’re in love.”
“Whoa. I am not in fucking love with anyone.”
“I haven’t seen you smile like that since grammar school.”
It was probably true. Seth didn’t smile. He didn’t play his emotions on his face at all. It was one of the reasons why he was so good at investigating. “Motherfucker.”
“Who is he?”
Seth couldn’t lie to Conner. It just didn’t work that way. They always told each other the truth of things. They looked a lot alike and could easily pass for twins with the auburn hair and freckles, but Conner wore gold-rimmed glasses.
“His name is Adam.”
“Adam. That’s cute.”
He was cute and sexy and sultry and fucking built like a running back. Not to mentioned, he fucked like a bull in heat. God, Seth couldn’t stop thinking about their last session. How out of control and wild his sub was when Seth took his cock in his ass.
Conner bounced the tennis ball with his racket off the court as he came around the net to talk. “How’d you guys meet?”
Seth thought about the slow dive into the Ohio River and how Adam had been in the right place at the right time to save his ass from drowning. “Work.”
“What happened to never dating coworkers?”
“It’s complicated.” More like a complicated mess, Seth thought derisively as he twirled his racket in his hand.
“Complicated how?”
Seth didn’t want to answer how much of a mess it was now. Falling in love with Adam was worst-case scenario for both of them. Their relationship had an expiration date that was quickly approaching. “We work together. I’ve known him a long time. I just don’t want the long-term with anyone right now.”
He’d always had a crush on Adam, but acting on the attraction wasn’t the smartest move. The more of Adam he had, the more he wanted. Letting him go wasn’t going to be easy, but it was something he needed to start thinking about. They both would want a smooth, clean break that wouldn’t fuck up their careers.
“It’s a temporary arrangement. We both went in with our eyes open.”
Conner didn’t look like he believed him. He looked like he tasted something sour and was ready to spit it out. Disbelief was getting overtime play on Conner’s face. Seth knew that that was one of the problems with having a brother who was a prosecutor. He could always tell when Seth was full of shit.
