The progress of the Kwara’ae ‘schools’ was reported enthusiastically in Not In Vain. By 1920 Rade had grown to about “eighty of the wildest bushmen” and a new ‘school’ village had been founded at A’arai on the coast south of Faumamanu (NIV May 1920). By 1922 there were six ‘schools’ in East Kwara’ae, and by 1923 there were seven. (These were, in rough order of decreasing size, Gwaubusu, Rade, Faubala, Dingodingo, Ngalikabara, Kerete and A’arai). Along the coast there were other new ‘schools’ at Fokanakafo at the mouth of the Auluta river in Fataleka and at Malaone (formerly Busu) in Kwaio (NIV 1922:5, Norman Deck 1923a). Only one of these ‘schools’ was far into the bush (at Faubala), but in 1923 Not In Vain noted that “the work is spreading fast up into the mountains” in Kwara’ae, which was now “perhaps the brightest district in the mission” (NIV Apr. 1923:6). In 1924 it was reported hopefully that “… a chain of schools may soon be established on the road over the mountains to the Government station at Auki, right across the island” (NIV Oct. 1924:7). By 1927,

At the Nongosila end are about seven hundred converts, and a chain of villages stretches right across the island. Recently a band of [Langalanga] Lagoon teachers walked over to Nongosila, preaching to the heathen en route. On their way back they gathered in fourteen fresh converts, who are all under instruction now in Christian villages. … in the mainland from Nongosila … continually new little centres are opening up. (NIV Apr. 1927:5)
