TOP 10 FILM APPEARANCES

1) Bobby Moore, Escape to Victory

England’s 1966 World Cup-winning captain appeared alongside Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone, Pelé and Ossie Ardiles in this 1981 World War II prison escape drama which is still a staple of the Christmas television schedules. Moore plays Terry Brady, one of the Allied prisoners who manage to evade their Nazi captors after playing in an exhibition football match against a crack German team, and delivers his occasional lines competently enough while also scoring a lovely volley in the tense 4-4 draw that dominates the latter part of the film.

2) Ian Wright, Gun of the Black Sun

The former Arsenal and England striker made an impressive acting debut as Duke in this 2011 action film, whose rather convoluted plot revolves around a World War II Nazi gun with magical powers which resurfaces in modern-day Bucharest. One online review – possibly from a Gunners fan, it has to be said – claimed Wright ‘is clearly leagues ahead of Vinnie Jones in the acting stakes’. High praise, indeed!

3) David Beckham, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

The former England captain had a cameo in this big-budget fantasy action adventure film in 2017, playing Trigger – a scarred guard who oversees the prisoners attempting to pull the sword Excalibur from the stone. Reviews of Beckham’s performance were not great, however, with The Telegraph’s critic suggesting he ‘showed just enough dramatic range to have played the stone the sword gets stuck in’. Ouch!

4) Stan Collymore, Basic Instinct 2

Collymore plays a footballer called Kevin Francis in the 2006 erotic thriller, but is given little time to develop his character as the car he is riding in with star Sharon Stone crashes into the Thames and, before the opening credits are even over, the former Liverpool and England striker is sinking into a watery grave. Perhaps, though, Stan’s early exit was all for the best as the film received very negative reviews and flopped at the box office.

5) Tony Currie and Mel Sterland, When Saturday Comes

Former England midfielder Tony Currie plays the role of a Sheffield United coach in this sporting drama from 1996, which stars Sean Bean as a hard-drinking non-league footballer who makes the jump into the big time and, somewhat implausibly, scores the winner for the Blades in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United. Ironically, Mel Sterland, who spent most of his career with Sheffield Wednesday and won a single England cap in 1988, plays the Sheffield United captain, his half-decent portrayal of a fiery old pro gaining him the acting garlands ahead of the largely mute Currie.

6) Barry Venison, Mike Bassett: England Manager

The twice-capped ex-Newcastle defender appears as himself in the 2001 mockumentary, as a studio pundit chatting to England boss Mike Bassett ahead of the start of the World Cup in Brazil. Unfortunately, there is a delay on the line to South America and the conversation between the pair is a rather confused affair. The film, which starred Ricky Tomlinson in the title role, was well-received by fans and was followed by a TV series in 2005.
