CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

BLUE

I know everything wrong won’t be miraculously fixed just because I agreed to come home, but seeing the need, vulnerability, and hurt in my husband’s eyes made me realize he finally wants the same thing I want—us. He wants us, and so do I.

The whole drive, I watch my rearview mirror more than I look out my windshield but somehow manage to make it back through the compound gates in one piece.

I’m parked, out of my SUV, and halfway to the back door when Mountain slides out of his truck and yells, “Damn, woman, if you drove any faster, I woulda pulled you over myself.” Every word brings him closer to me.

Pressing my back to the door, I reply, “Oh yeah, then what would you have done?”

Stepping into my bubble, his lips graze my ear. “Then I would’ve bent your ass over and fucked you on the side of the road, frozen balls and all.”

On wobbly legs, I reach for the door handle behind me, turn it, and back away from his heat. “I guess it’s a good thing we’ve got a big bed you can bend me over just inside. I wouldn’t want you to lose your manhood ‘cause of me.”

“Get your ass in our room and get naked,” Mountain growls. “Now.”

So, I do. After closing the back door, I pray for no interruptions but all I hear is voices in the main room. Ignoring all of our family, I use my key to open the door to our private space. Stepping inside, I shuck my coat and Property cut, kick off my boots, and head straight for the bedroom.

I have every intention of following Mountain’s order of getting naked but make it no further than tossing my duffel bag on a chair in the corner before I see Diva staring up at me from her sprawled-out perch on our bed.

“What are we gonna do with our new little friend?” I ask as Mountain presses his front to my back, resting his chin on my shoulder.

“She’ll probably be scarred for life if she sees what I wanna do to you right now.”

“Let’s move her and her litter box out into the living room,” I suggest, heading for the bathroom, where the box has been since Mountain brought Diva home for good. “Then she won’t be sticking her paws in places they don’t belong.”

I barely have the kitten nudged out the door and start to close it when a hand appears beside me, slamming it shut. My right hand is grabbed, I’m spun around, and my back is pressed against the door. Mountain’s crutches crash to the floor with a clatter, but neither of us pay them any mind because his lips crash down on mine and we become too distracted by each other.

Mountain has his hands braced against the wall on either side of my head, so I take advantage of the perfect position he’s put himself in to do something I haven’t gotten to do in a very long time.
