FINALLY, A long while later, Eric stood and told Nathan to take the rest of the day and do something that would make him feel better—nap, exercise, soak in a nice warm bubble bath—and he’d come back in a few hours with something else to eat.

Nathan could still feel the imprint of Eric’s kiss on his forehead when he heard a soft knock.

“Nathan?” Evan’s stage whisper carried well enough to be heard, but even Eric probably could’ve slept through it. “Can I come in?”

“Why?” Nathan cringed and quickly followed with “Come in.”

Evan entered slowly, closed the door without a sound, and came to sit on the bed where Eric had been. He made a visible effort to straighten his back and meet Nathan’s eyes. “I’m sorry. I wish I hadn’t said any of those nasty things. I wanted to be mean to you, and I don’t even know why. You’ve been great, letting me stay here and trying to be friendly…. I’m sorry, Nathan.”

Nathan sat up, and after a moment’s hesitation, embraced his brother. They held on tight for a long time. Finally Nathan kissed Evan’s cheek and smiled. “I’ve been shamelessly exploiting your willingness to do laundry and wield cleaning products.”

“You don’t have to do that. Deflect. I won’t be flinging uncomfortable subjects in your face again.”

“Fair enough. But not all of my humor is meant to deflect.”

“I know. You always made us laugh. I remember that.”

“I’m sorry I never visited. If it made you feel bad, I mean. If I’d known you’d turn out to be so cool, I probably would’ve been around more.”

Evan looked at Nathan for a long time, an appraising look but not an unkind one. “Do you mind if I ask you something?”

“If I say yes, will it make any difference?”

“Probably not.” Evan grinned.

Nathan answered with a long-suffering sigh and a look to match, which only made Evan’s grin larger.

He gets it.

“Go ahead, then.”

“Why don’t you have an S.O.? You’re handsome, smart, fun to be around…. Don’t try to tell me you don’t want to be with someone.”

“Were you listening out in the hall?”

Evan blushed. “Sort of. I didn’t hear enough to answer that question, though. I mean, if you weren’t my brother—”

“No. You are not going to finish that sentence. Not ever.”

Evan shrugged. Or maybe shivered. “I’m just saying. Is it bad for me to want you to be happy?”

“What about you? What happened to your curvy girl?”

“I fucked it up.”

Nathan’s shock was too great to hide. “Is that what they taught you at Reed?”

Evan laughed. “Actually, I think you taught me the word ‘fuck.’”

“That sounds about right.” Nathan hoped his smile, which was real, meant Evan wouldn’t see the tiny part of him that felt good that he wasn’t the only Lucas who sucked at getting close to people. “Well. I’m waiting.”

Evan’s grin was only slightly bitter. Obviously he wanted to tell the story. “A guy we knew, someone we thought was smart and not a total asshole, he talked some shit about people who blatantly ignored societal beauty standards.
