Late on Christmas afternoon Ben pulls the recliners over by the fire pit, waits while Allie lays back, covers her with a rug, and hands her a mug of tea. Polly is already in her chair with a glass of port, her own patchwork quilt tucked around her knees. Alex stretches out on the other recliner, one foot resting on the ground, and pats the seat for Ben to come and sit. He kisses him first, sets two glasses of wine on the ground next to them and retrieves a plate with leftover chocolate cake from the night before; finally, he settles in, and flips their own rug over the two of them. Runs his finger through the chocolate frosting and holds it up to Alex’s mouth. Shivers when Alex sucks it clean, then kisses his head.

“Boys, it’s meant to be a family show remember,” Allie teases.

“Sorry,” Alex says, and Ben knows without looking that a blush is creeping up his throat to his cheeks. He looks anyway. Smirks when he catches Alex’s eye; he knows Alex is a long way from having resolved his shame issues; may never fully resolve them, but they’ve made a start and he’ll take it for now.

Ben finishes his cake, sits up to place the plate on the table, and settles back down, turning on his side so he can look at his mother and Polly. Pulls Alex’s arm over him and laces their fingers together.

“I miss your hair,” he tells Allie. He doesn’t like the short pixie cut and not just because it reminds him of how sick she is. He can’t remember her ever having short hair when he was growing up. Her long braid, or the loose curls for special occasions, platinum when he was younger, silver over the past decade, are as much a part of how he identifies his mother as her quiet honesty and her habit of tapping her nails on her teeth when she’s thinking.

“Do you?” she says, smiling. “I don’t. You know, if I’d known how much easier to look after it would be, I would have cut it years ago.”

“It suits you,” Alex says and Ben frowns. “You’re very beautiful, you have lovely eyes, and with it short you can really see them. Ben got your eyes.”

Ben relaxes when Alex presses a kiss to his head and whispers ‘it’s okay’ in his ear.

“When do you go back up?” Allie asks.

“Probably day after New Year,” Ben says with a sigh. He wishes they could stay but he knows Alex has to be back in the unit and even though the office is closed for the holidays, he still has a case load to deal with and if he gets called in will have to go back earlier. The senior partners said they would try to not call on him but he’s a realist, if they feel it necessary they will. He sips his wine.

“I was wondering if you would go with me the day after tomorrow to Johnsons and look at some cars.
