Recording of The Nutcracker Suite

World map or globe

Procedure:

"You have just played rhythm and now we're going to listen to a wonderful part from The Nutcracker Suite [Tchaikovsky, written in 1891–1892]. Here is a picture of the composer, Mr. Pyotr Tchaikovsky, who lived in Russia between 1840 and 1893. I'll show you where Russia is on the map [teacher points to it and then traces his or her finger to the town where the students' school is] and where we live. Please get your ears ready for listening, rest your lips, and hear just a bit of this and please notice the rhythm—long and short sounds."

Teacher plays part of the "Overture"—around twenty-five seconds—so that the class hears the predominant rhythmic pattern that occurs. He or she then claps the designated pattern to the class a few times, humming the melodic element, then has the class show a "thumbs up" when they hear the pattern in the music. He or she plays around thirty-five seconds of the piece. "Jill, what do we call that part of the piece that I clapped and you identified? Rhythm is correct."
