The road bridge at Cartland Craigs, or Crags, near Lanark, owes everything to its imposing ravine setting. The bridge is carried aloft on two slender piers to 129 feet above Mouse Water. It was built between 1820 and 1823.
This contemporary print shows how the latest engineering marvels of the time were depicted as additions which enhanced the natural landscape.
