Chapter Seven

Dean followed that smell. Now that it was in his nose, tickling the nerve endings there, it was like a beacon calling to him, a light in the gloom that he could follow home.

Not home. That wolf was not home. It was owner of the howl he’d heard several months ago. He wasn’t sure how he knew it, since he hadn’t heard the wolf barking, but the scent of it…

The scent of that wolf when Dean had it in his jaws brought about the same feeling he’d gotten the first time he’d heard that lovely howl.

Mate.

Dean had tried so hard to put that sensation out of his mind that he’d thought he’d succeeded for a time. He’d thought he’d broken off whatever connection he’d had to the strange wolf. Apparently that wasn’t the case, and he was mated to this creature.

No. He wouldn’t accept it. Joey was his mate, and he was the only one Dean would ever have.

Besides, this wolf did need to die. It was clearly a danger, a savage thing. Dean had felt it stalking the lodge ever since Sam had arrived. He hadn’t liked the chill that sensation had brought him, and he’d seen it in a fight.

It was determined to hurt them, and at the very least, it was determined to kill Sam.

Probably because Sam had been its first prey, and now it was focused on the hunt.

He wouldn’t let that happen. Dean didn’t want Logan to go through what Dean was going through. He didn’t want Todd or Colten to have to worry that some omega-killing wolf was out there, and that it might target them and their pups next.

It needed to die.

And Dean would be damned if he allowed any of the guys to do it. Dean would do it. He’d put the wolf out of its misery, and if killing a mate, on purpose this time, was cause enough for him to follow it, then so be it.

Despite what he’d said to Max and the others about not being suicidal, there was still a part of him that felt tired of waking up every morning, and honestly, this was a good excuse to go.

He wasn’t sure if the wolf was an alpha or a beta, but Dean was still bigger than it was, his legs longer, and he had more muscle. He was able to push his body, pumping himself through the snow to get to where he needed to go, following the tracks and smell the wild wolf left behind.

Then he spotted it. Just up ahead.

It seemed the wolf had stopped to rest, to lick at the wounds on its paws.

Those black-tipped ears twitched as it looked up, spotted Dean coming for it, and then ran.

It was right to run. As much as Dean’s instincts were calling him to that wolf, his plans didn’t change. He would kill it before it could kill anyone innocent.

He told himself that again and again, just to make sure his plans were real, and that he wouldn’t back down off of them.
