I don’t remember the journey back from London to North Wales. I just remember being in the lift after that appointment, and Mike crying. We were all so deflated and upset. But Mike still wasn’t about to merely ‘put his affairs in order’. He still had fight in him. We all did. None of us were ready to accept the fatalism we’d been met with. We resolved to stand firm, together, and dig our heels in. We were going to fight it. We were going to fight it with physiotherapy, with diet, with alternative remedies, with anything we could find, from anywhere in the world.

We needed a plan. Dad became the fixer. If Mike needed something practical like the correct springs for his foot drop device, Dad would get them. If he needed a bit of kit adapting, like the hand grip of his electric wheelchair, Dad would sort it. A self-cleaning toilet would be researched, sourced and fitted. Nothing was ever too difficult. Mandy became the behind-the-scenes organiser. She could absorb the headaches and the torrents of paperwork, and make things happen. And, as I lived close to Mike, I was able to be with him every day. Together with Laura, Story and everyone else who helped, we made a great team.
