Chapter Four

Locke woke up to find breakfast waiting for him. Ash had somehow sneaked away from him and sent down for food, and Locke sat up and grinned at his mate. Sunlight spilled through the sheer white curtains and made Ash’s brown hair look almost golden as he brought one tray over to Locke and set it in his lap.

“I’m supposed to be spoiling you,” Locke said as he lifted the domed lid and found heaping servings of fried eggs, sausage, and bacon.

“We can take turns, like you said.” Ash returned to the table and picked up a pitcher from another tray. He poured two glasses of juice and carried them over. After handing Locke his glass, Ash sat on the bed beside Locke and crossed his legs underneath him. “Besides, I have to feed you before I can feed.” He licked his lips and smiled coyly before taking a sip of his juice.

“You didn’t have to wait for me, if you needed blood.”

Ash shook his head slowly. “You said you didn’t want me feeding from another.”

Locke picked up his fork and cast his eyes down at the tray. “I believe I was in the throes of my possessiveness when I said that. Now that I’m feeling more confident about the two of us, I won’t be quite so possessive.”

“Doesn’t matter. It’s what I want as well. Any other blood would pale in comparison now anyway.”

“It’s that much of a difference?”

“Yes. It’s intoxicating. The best way to describe it would be if you were on some sort of, shall we say, recreational substance? Something that really had you riding high. I’ve also heard it described as drinking incredibly strong wine. But it’s unmistakable. No vampire is ever wrong.”

“Makes me even more excited about giving you my blood, if it makes you feel that good.”

Ash smiled, but then his look turned a bit more serious.

Locke cut up a sausage and ate half of it before asking, “What is it?”

“I was thinking about something. About the new home we’re going to make for ourselves.”

“Tell me what you’re thinking. I’m eager for it. I’d like to build a house big enough for all of us. I can teach you how to do all of it. I built our cottage myself.”

“You did?” Ash asked, his eyes wide.

“Yes. Bear shifters are very strong. Mama Cat helped. Even at her age, she could lift you over her head.”

Ash’s eyes went even wider. “Wow.” A hint of a smile returned to his face. “I love your name for her. It’s sweet, plus I love cats.”

“Then we’ll have to adopt a few. Or let them adopt us, knowing cats.”

“Indeed.” Ash sighed and gazed over at Locke as if he had something difficult to say.

“Ash, is something wrong?” If Ash had reservations about anything, Locke wanted to know. And do something about it.

“No, not at all. I just want to talk about something that may be awkward.”

Locke thought he knew what Ash meant. “After last night, you wonder how many lovers I’ve had.
