It’s 2005, a moped race. For six years, Kimi and his mates used to go to Mikkeli, to the summer cabin of someone called Ville to race on so-called children’s mopeds. The race took place in August, and the participants also went to the sauna on a couple of days. On one occasion, they decided to build a ramp on top of their trailer and use it to ride into the lake. Kimi attempted a backflip on his moped but failed. He abandoned the bike mid-flight and flopped into the lake. ‘You won’t do that on my moped,’ said many of his mates. At least ten discarded mopeds were found at the scene.

Sepi, Ville’s father, was in the habit of visiting that same cabin every summer to go to the sauna and to have a swim. He happened to be there at the same time. When he got into the sauna, he found a young man sitting on a bench. The two of them sat there having a chat. When Sepi said he was going for a swim, the young man (Kimi) was alarmed: ‘Don’t for God’s sake jump in – it’s full of mopeds!’ In the morning, the lads borrowed an anchor from next door to pull the mopeds out of the water. ‘Be quiet, we’re fishing Kawas,’ Kimi said. All the mopeds were Kawasakis.

Later, Sepi told his son Ville that he had met a totally unhinged chap in the sauna. The chap had been drinking, claiming that he was a Formula 1 driver.
