Dawson, perhaps uniquely for a big star at the start of a make-or-break TV series, chose not to get involved in these critical discussions. ‘I don’t know what Les felt. I think Les would just go with the flow,’ says Hamilton. Dawson’s willingness to go along with the consensus was an irritation in some ways, but a boon in others, Hamilton felt:

Although it could frustrate you, it was an appealing side to his personality as well, because he was very low-maintenance. I was just starting out, so I didn’t know that yet. I hadn’t worked with other comedians, and I was a bit cocky and a bit pushy, so I was always trying to push for a bit more, but looking back, he was even-tempered, he was good around the crew. He generated a good atmosphere. He was good fun to be around, so I think it’s not that he didn’t care, but he didn’t agonize, and there’s a lot to be said for that.38
